Ukraine won't withdraw gas suit from Stockholm - PM

Ukraine will not withdraw its suit connected with the gas dispute with Russia from Stockholm, said Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk.

"We strongly doubt that Russia will accept the proposal which we had made jointly with the European Commission. We filed a suit. I would like to underscore emphatically that Ukraine will not withdraw it from the Stockholm court," he told the Cabinet in Kyiv on Tuesday.

The state company Naftogaz Ukrainy on June 16 2014 filed a suit with the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, demanding that a fair market price be set for the gas which Gazprom exports to Ukraine. The suit also demands that Gazprom refund the extras paid for gas since 2010. This overcharge amounts to $6 billion, according to the Ukrainian holding company.

On the same day Gazprom filed a suit against Naftogaz seeking the recovery of a debt amounting to $4.5 billion for the gas already delivered.

Russia's and Ukraine's suits filed with the Stockholm court were combined into one case. Kyiv expects an interim ruling on the gas contracts to arrive before the end of the current year, which will allow Ukraine to get Russian gas at an interim price.
