No large rise in bread prices to be seen in near term, says ministry

There will not be a large rise in bread prices in the near term, the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry has reported.

"There will not be a large rise in the prices, this is a separate operation of separate companies. I understand that people want to buy cheap bread and our task today is to balance the market," Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Ihor Shvaika told reporters in Kyiv on Monday.

He said that now a working group which will discus and regulate the issue has been created at the ministry. The minister said that during the formation of prices of bread several factors should be taken into account.

"We have a war in the country. In the light of the fact that we have a rise in the price of gas, fuel, the prices of bread cannot be artificially kept the same," he said.

Shvaika also said that the ministry was working on a document that would oblige bakeries to use flour from the Agrarian Fund only for social types of bread.

"Flour from the Agrarian Fund should be sent to bake bread with a simple receipe, so-called social types of bread which are most popular among the disadvantaged population," he said.
