Poroshenko, Merkel discuss prospects of signing economic part of EU-Ukraine Association Agreement

Newly elected Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have discussed prospects of signing the economic section of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement during a working dinner in Berlin.

"Petro Poroshenko and Angela Merkel have also discussed prospects of Ukraine's European integration, economical cooperation and general view of key elements to settle the situation in eastern Ukraine," Poroshenko's press office said in a statement on Friday.

Poroshenko told Merkel about his view of future steps as the Ukrainian president, it concerned in particular the initiatives to restore peace and establish nationwide dialogue, the press office said.

Fighting corruption, amending the Constitution "with a special emphasis on de-centralization and economic reforms" are important for Ukraine, Poroshenko said.

Merkel said she congratulated Poroshenko with a convincing victory in the first tour of the presidential elections. "She also stated comprehensive support for Ukraine and readiness to cooperate with the newly elected president on a wide range of issues," the statement said.

"Poroshenko intends to continue dialogue with Merkel and other leaders on pressing cooperation issues during the events, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Allied troops arriving to Normandy, in France on June 6," the press office said.
