U.S. to help ensure energy security for Ukraine - Biden

2 min read

The United States will help Ukraine to resolve the issues around energy resources and believes that with the right kind of investment the country can increase its energy security, U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden said.

Currently, the U.S. is working in the region with Ukraine and its neighbors to resolve the issue of providing Ukraine with energy resources in the short term. Additional measures will be in place to make sure that no country, Russia in particular, can use its energy resources as a political weapon against Ukraine or Europe, Biden said after his meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk in Kyiv on Tuesday.

With the right kinds of investments and choices, Ukraine can reduce its energy dependency and raise its energy security. The U.S. will support Ukraine at every step, he added.

The U.S. is also set to help Ukraine get an IMF (International Monetary Fund) loan and welcomes the Ukrainian government's steps in conducting the reforms in order to receive this funding, the U.S. vice president said.

We are the driving force in our work with the IMF to ensure it grants a multi-billion dollar package to Ukraine, so that Ukraine could resolve the problems it is facing. I think this IMF package will be completed straight away and I welcome the Ukrainian government's efforts to implement the reforms to comply with the IMF conditions, Biden said.
