Naftogaz Ukrainy plans to import gas from Europe under contracts with German and French companies, says minister

National joint-stock company Naftogaz Ukrainy plans to import natural gas using the reverse routes under contracts with German and French companies, Energy and Coal Industry Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Prodan said in the parliament last week.

"We'll urgently purchase gas using the reverse routes on the conditions proposed by European gas supply companies, and we plane that these will be Germany's RWE and a French gas company," he said.

The press service of the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry told Interfax-Ukraine that the negotiations are being held with Gaz de France.

As reported, Naftogaz Ukrainy from November 2012 started importing natural gas from Germany via Poland under contracts with RWE Supply&Trading GmbH. From April 2013, Ukraine started natural gas supplies from Hungary. Negotiations with gas transport operators of Slovakia and Romania on the possibility of delivering natural gas to the Ukrainian gas transport system.

From March 2013, private companies started importing natural gas from Europe to Ukraine. In 2013, Naftogaz Ukrainy, OstChem, VETEK Group and DTEK imported gas from Russia and Europe.

In 2013, Ukraine imported 2.132 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Europe.

When Russia declared that the price of natural gas for Ukraine is sharply increased from the second quarter of 2014 the expansion of reverse gas supplies from Europe is a beneficial and required thing for Ukraine.
