Ukraine intends by 2020 to bring share of domestic cars on market to 70% - Azarov

Ukraine intends by 2020 to increase the domestic production of passenger cars to 735,000, bringing their share of the national passenger car market to 70%, as well as increase their exports to 220,000 cars.

Such plans are stipulated in the draft concept of the state targeted program for the development of the automotive industry until 2020, which the Cabinet intends to approve on January 15, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov said when opening a government meeting on Wednesday.

"The program is aimed at creating conditions for the growth of passenger car output to 735,000 and increasing the export potential to 220,000 cars by 2020, boosting the share of domestic cars on the internal market to 70%, as well as creating up to 176,000 jobs in the production of motor vehicles and components," said the prime minister.

In addition, he said that it was very important that the concept foresees implementing international quality standards in the automotive industry, and using advanced technologies, i.e. creating high quality produce.

As reported, Ukrainian automakers in 2013 reduced the production of motor vehicles (cars and buses) by 33.9% compared to 2012, to 50,449 units. The production of passenger cars fell by 34.3%, to 45,758 units. Car exports fell several times because of the introduction of a vehicle recycling tax in Russia, the major export market.
