Ukraine cuts coal extraction by 6.2% in 5 months

Coalmines in Ukraine in January-May 2013 tentatively cut raw coal extraction by 6.2% or 2.242 million tonnes year-over-year, to 33.799 million tonnes, a source in the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry has told Interfax-Ukraine.

The source said that coking coal over the period fell by 6.2% or 659,200 tonnes, to 10 million tonnes, and steam coal production was also down by 6.2% Oleh Tiahnybok 1.583 million tonnes, to 23.798 million tonnes.

Coalmines under management of the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry in January-May 2013 cut coal extraction by 7.7% or 778,500 tonnes, to 9.285 million tonnes. Coking coal output fell by 7.8% or 226,800 tonnes, to 2.682 million tonnes and steam coal production dropped by 7.7% or 551,700 tonnes, to 6.603 million tonnes.

All coalmines over the period over-fulfilled the target for coal production set by the ministry by 11.5%, and the ministry's coalmines – by 0.8%.

Mines in Donetsk region in January-May 2013 extracted 15.493 million tonnes of coal (a fall of 6.1% year-over-year), that in Luhansk region – 10.537 million tonnes (a fall of 5.9%), Dnipropetrovsk region – 7.015 million tonnes (a decline of 1.4%), Lviv region – 599,500 tonnes (a decline of 32.2%) and Volyn region (a decline of 3.7%).
