Ukraine bans imports of pork from Belarus due to suspicions over ASF outbreak

Ukraine from May 7, 2013 has banned imports of pigs, pork and products made of it from Belarus due to the possible outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in a district of Belarus.

"Due to media reports of deaths of animals in Baranovichi district of Belarus, and suspicions that there has been an outbreak of ASF, under a resolution of the deputy chief veterinary inspector of May 7, 2013, importing animals susceptible to ASF and products made of them from this country is temporarily banned until the facts are confirmed," reads the report of the State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service of Ukraine issued on May 7, 2013.

African swine fever infects domestic pigs, warthogs and wild pigs. There is no vaccine or treatment.

In Ukraine, one case of ASF was registered in Zaporizhia region on July 31, 2012.
